Old Famous Jalebi Wala is one of the most famous places for jalebis in Delhi. More street food here: http://migrationology.com/
So what is a jalebi? A jalebi is sort of like an Indian donut. It all begins with a batter mixture that includes flour and other ingredients. The batter is then loaded into a funnel type of device or a cloth and then it's swirled into hot boiling oil or ghee until it deep fries until turning golden in color. The jalebis are then removed and strained from the oil before being submerged in a pool full of sweet rose flavored syrup. After being dunked and sweetened the Indian sweets are then removed and drained and ready to be served!
Old Delhi is a fantastic place to find all sorts of famous and delicious Indian street foods. Along with places like Paranthe Wali Gali, a lane of deep fried paratha bread vendors, Karims Hotel that serves grilled meat kebabs, and countless Indian snack chaat stores, you'll find Old Famous Jalebi Wala. This longstanding jalebi stall that sits on the corner of Chandni Chowk, is a renowned place to eat this sweetly treasured treats.
Now I'm personally not an expert when it comes to sweets and when it comes to jalebis. The true connoisseurs all have their own opinions. I had had jalebis a number of times prior to sampling Old Famous Jalebi Wala, but nothing compared to the quality and the taste of the ones here. It was perfectly crunchy and thick, and as I took a bit it leaked amazingly sweet and fragrant syrup. Though I'm not really much of a sweet tooth, this jalebi was truly incredible and I did enjoy it. However, I definitely could not eat more than a few bites as I tend to get sweetened out quite quickly. The jalebis at Old Famous Jalebi Wala are very expensive when comparing them to the normal street food prices in India. But nevertheless, due to their fame and their high quality ingredients, they have not trouble selling many jalebis each day. People even stand in line, braving the intense traffic, to wait for their opportunity for a sweet treat.
If you love to eat sweets and are visiting Delhi, stopping at Old Famous Jalebi Wala is a wonderful chance to grab a sample. Their jalebis will melt in your mouth as drops of sweet syrup drip down your chin!
Prices: The hot fresh jalebis cost 300 INR ($5.45) per kilo which is quite a bit. For this video I just ordered the minimum portions which costs 50 INR ($0.91) and that was more than enough to satisfy my small sweet tooth.
How to get there: Old Famous is located in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, and you can take the Metro to Chandni Chowk station, walk east past the Sheeshganj Gurudwara Sikh Temple and it will be on your right hand side (south side) on the corner of Dariba Kalan lane.
Address: At the intersection of Dariba Kalan and Chandni Chowk, New Delhi
Open Hours: Around 8 am - 10 pm daily
