Growing up, I was always interested in the battles between Hernan Cortez and the Aztecs. For me, it's one of the defining moments of history. Of course, Cortez was certainly no hero--but I wondered, what do Mexicans today, the descendants of the Conquista, think about the man?
Just 30 minutes north of Veracruz, on Mexico's Caribbean coast, lies La Antigua, the original settlement of Cortez and the Spaniards before they embarked on their conquest of the Aztec Empire. Today it's a small village. Given it's history, I thought it would be a great place to discuss this complicated part of Mexico's past. Along the way I also learned what a "political relative" is.
