Join this channel to get early access to new videos a week ahead of their public release: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC8R7kmt-W14zWUcr8mymEQ/join Hello everybody! :D Much like the Picc-Vic Tunnel in Manchester, the 1970s also presented another highly advanced and infrastructure heavy rapid transit project for a northern English city in the form of the Sheffield Monorail or Minitram, an urban system that would have run from Sheffield Station through the heart of the central business district before ending at Moorfoot adjacent to the main shopping street, with this proposal being mooted as a means of alleviating the already overburdened bus network only 15 years after the last trams had run through Sheffield's streets. Unfortunately, the Monorail came at precisely the wrong time and was perhaps the wrong project for a city of Sheffield's scale, as while the concept was indeed novel and innovative, the reality was an exceptionally costly and disruptive development that was to be delivered while Britain was in the grips of a major recession, and ultimately the costs and figures did not add up to allow for a viable rapid transit system, with the Sheffield Supertram of 1994 instead being the city's new but controversial venture into sustainable public transport alternatives.
