I’m talking about BAJA California, the California that’s in Mexico. It used to be unified with the more famous California in the US, when the Mexicans called it Alta California. It’s the more heavily trafficked border in the world. Each year, there are more than 30 million crossings made. It has a very different feel from the border with Texas—here, just like there, the Mexican side is influenced by the US side. And what do you have on the US side here? San Diego and Los Angeles, the biggest gathering of people the US has on any border. Or as the Cartel views, the biggest drug market to export to in the world. I wanted to fully experience this region, in spite of its dangers. I decided to rent a car with a new friend of mine—very appropriately, an immigrant to the US from Czechia. We would travel the whole length of the peninsula, with no idea what we would find. Most of Baja is completely barren. But there are surprises, everything from salt plains in Guerrero Negro to old Chinese communities in Mexicali.
