Farm Beneath Our Feet: Poop Patrol

What can studying cattle poop teach us? Quite a lot, actually. Dr. Sally Bornbusch, the George E. Burch Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, explains how collecting cattle feces helps scientists understand livestock microbiomes; and what they can reveal about animal health, wellbeing and the land they graze on. This project is a collaboration between the Zoo's Virginia Working Landscapes program, the Center for Conservation Genomics and the Bird Friendly program. The research explores how regenerative agricultural practices shape the connections between soil health, plant and animal microbiomes, biodiversity and livestock health. The reality of the work? Long days in the field waiting for cows to do their thing, affectionately dubbed “poop patrol.” 💩 This is Episode 1 of our new miniseries, The Farm Beneath Our Feet. Follow along for #FarmFridays throughout January as we share each episode.
